Smoking Poll
« on: 27 February 2005, 21:53:10 »
March 9th is National No Smoking Day in the UK.  Whether you are a smoker, ex smoker or never smoked, most people have strong views on the subject.

I personally think that focusing on one particular day will not encourage anyone to quit.

I also hope that they never ban smoking in open public places.

Instead of a particular day being used to target smokers, with all the money spent on big billboard notices etc, the money would be better spent going towards supporting those who are trying to quit, with the free provision of patches etc.

Anyone agree?   disagree?

I dont smoke, but I am sick to death with the circus that surrounds Smokers, ie Advertising Dont Smoke help gadgets, pills and patches, every second ad is telling you the dangers of smoking around children, doesnt this come under the heading of Common Sense? If I happen to be anywhere and I see someone smoking I dont go near them, why should a smoker be branded like a bloody Leper? give the poor sods a bell and be done with it.
I do not allow smoking in my home, Our Daughter smokes, and sits on the verandah as do my friends when ever they wish to indulge, it has been banned in most Restraunts in Australia and next year will e banned in Pubs and Clubs, how Ironic is that? You cant smoke because you will be endangering peoples health, but step right up and give us your money for a Bourbon and Coke, Please!!!!! Equal Rights my foot, in this Country a Smoker is treated like a  second class citizen, I dont care what anyone does with their body, Im not doing it, and I dont think that anyone should be allowed to dictate where you can and cant smoke.
Spend some millions on educating the young on the Dangers of Alchol Abuse.

A timely debate. below is an article from the CBC (Canada's BBC) news:-

****************
UN tobacco control treaty comes into force
Last Updated Sun, 27 Feb 2005 15:47:28 EST
CBC News

GENEVA - The first international treaty aimed at reducing smoking-related deaths and illness came into effect Sunday, the World Health Organization said.

The treaty was a Canadian initiative, said H?l?ne Goulet, director general of Canada's tobacco control program.

Fifty-seven countries, including Canada, have ratified the treaty, formally known as WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Member countries promise to crack down on advertising, sponsorship and promotion of tobacco products. The treaty also pushes for tougher tobacco labelling laws.

WHO says smoking is the world's second leading cause of preventable deaths. Hypertension is the first.

The UN body estimates nearly five million people die prematurely each year from tobacco-related diseases.

If current smoking trends are not reversed, WHO warns by 2020, tobacco will kill 10 million people, 70 per cent of them in developing countries.

"So this treaty is a first step in that direction," said Goulet.

WHO tobacco co-ordinator Douglas Bettcher says the treaty, if properly implemented, can curb the global tobacco epidemic.

The treaty contains provisions aimed at dissuading children from smoking and helping adults to kick the habit.

It recommends tax and price increases on tobacco products, a crackdown on smuggling and measures to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke.

**************
Does not really say much but I wonder how many millions went into making this treaty?

In Canada each province has its own rules regarding smoking. Here in Nova Scotia there is no smoking in public places. If you wish to smoke you have to go outside and there are regulations about how far you have to be from a door, window etc. Hospitals and schools have a policy where you can not smoke on their grounds which includes sitting in your car in an out door parking lot.
Bars and clubs do not allow smoking until after 9pm, unless they have an enclosed smoking room with its own ventilation. The 9 pm thing does not make much sense as the residue will be there the next day any way but the reason they give is that at most bars food is served until 9 pm so kids are allowed in there to eat if of course they are accompanied by an adult. Thing is there are places such as the pool hall in town where you have to be 19 (drinking age) no kids allowed yet the same rules apply.
Yes we all know smoking is bad for you and any one around you but in as far as yourself is concerned the choice should be yours.

Here in L.A. you can't smoke anywhere inside except in your own home, and I must say that I find it much more pleasant not to have people smoking in restaurants or offices.  The air conditioning systems in most buildings spreads any odor throughout the floor.  So I am in favour of a ban on smoking inside.  But, as you may have noticed, before the ban was in place, a substantial number of smokers were totally inconsiderate and blew tobacco smoke all over everybody, which was extremely unpleasant, aside from the health factors.  And even after the ban came into effect, there were certain people in our firm who just closed their office doors and carried on smoking regardless.  They had to have one recalcitrant smoker's office scrubbed down and repainted after she left, and they never totally got rid of the smell of stale tobacco.  At least on the whole, smokers now have no choice but to go outside if they want to smoke.

Now of course those inconsiderate smokers are causing a lot of other health problems. They go outside and huddle around in -20 weather with the snow or rain howling around them and then go back in the buildings sneezing and coughing on everyone so that colds and flu are spread like wildfire

Yes you are correct.
They set up tents outside every building and supply them with convection heaters.
Some of them even have floor shows and a bar set up.
Of course having all these tents set up means that there is no room for traffic, but no one seems to mind.

Wait a minute - maybe this is all the result of a dream I had

Ah, but Toronto is in Ontario and as I mentioned all provinces have their own rules. Here in Nova Scotia they really want us to quit smoking and take up gambling, apparently the Goverment makes more $$$$ from gambling and there are not so many nay sayers

Excellent.  Well, at least you don't die from gambling.  Gambling is all the rage in the States too: lotto, bingo, slots, and even cards.  The Indians are making a fortune from it! :angry9:

They are here as well. The problems seem to be with the slot machines. They are in just about every bar and there are people who are addicted to them. It seems that once someone wins a decent amount they feel they will do it every time and so spend their whole house hold income on them.
The problem does not seem to be limited to any one class either as there are people from all walks of life, education and social background.
You are wrong when you state that gambling does not kill people as it has been confirmed as the reason for a number of suicides and suspected in many others.
Almost every week there is a story in the news of someone who has stolen from there employer, charity, social group etc and have given the reason as gambling.
As with tobacco, and booze, this is a real cash cow for the government so they are very hesitant to make any changes.
In Nova Scotia we have two casino's, and these do not appear to be as much of a problem as the slots in the bars. Seems like each Indian reservation also have a 24 hour games room where the only games are slots.
Although the minimum bet on these machines the maximum bet is $2.50, and they spin a whole lot faster than the ones at the casino's so a player can (and usually does) lose over $10.00 a minute. The maximum they can win on one spin is $500.00.
Being electronic devices these machines can be programed to the percent that they will pay out, currently I think I read that they are set at 28%. Which means the government gets about 68 cents of every dollar that goes in, the bar gets 4 cents and 28 cents is returned to the players.
In the casino's I think that the player take is slightly higher. Did I mention that the government owns the casino's?

Sorry Lolo, I thought by my previous comments that you would know that I am a smoker.
I understand the problems non smokers have with those of us who indulge as on those frequent times when I have quit I notice the smell that is left on clothing and around the house.
I find that the people who seem the most against smokers are those that have managed to kick the habit. From there comments I can only conclude that having given up the one thing in life that they enjoyed they are bound and determined that every one should be as miserable as they are.
People who either have never smoked or have not smoked much in their lives seem a lot more tolerant toward us poor souls who are having a hard time getting off it.
Not sure about the double edge sword though as while I am not a brandy affectionate I do enjoy a beer or two ( some times even more).
Guess I have either the best or worse of both worlds depending upon your point of view.

Not sure if any one would be interested, but here is a web site from the Ontario government.

Sorry KBTS  I didn't realise you smoked, as is your god given right, Im just sick of what I think is the injustice surounding smokers. Gambling in this Country is a Huge Government Revenue, most clubs have no windows in the Gambling rooms, so that people have no idea of the time of day, a fact I was unaware of. Im sure Aussies would bet on two flies walking up a wall,I play Golf and after a round, the women usually put in a dollar and have a keno ticket, I throw my dollar in then forget about it. If we win its a bonus but it is so anti social as all the women watch the Screen as if their lives depended on it Im trying to have a conversation and all I get is "Oh no 6 is out and no 14 " who cares.? and the Poker Machines are worse they are in pubs and clubs everywhere, a lot of young teenagers are addicted I have a friend who has a gambling problem she is quick to tell me what she has won, but I watch her put the money in time after time and walk away with nothing,

My father, father-in-law and mother-in-law died as a result of smoking.

I appreciate that there are other addictions, but all I know is that my father was taken from me when he was very young as a result of smoking.

My father worked overseas most of the time I was growing up and died before my youngest brother actually got to know him.

I have memories of his driving the family car on? a Sunday when he was in the UK.? Each time, I would be so car sick because of the cigarette smoke.? If a non-smoker drove the car, it was not a problem.

Puleeeze, I am not a do-gooder.? I have just scanned over previous postings.? I am just reporting on my own experience.

When I was a child, the smell of tobacco was quite comforting to me (outside of the car, that is).

I don't like breathing in cigarrete smoke.? I don't like my hair or clothes smelling of cigarette smoke - something I put up with for years? in the workforce.

In Western Australia, the only places you can smoke are at home or in the pub or some clubs.

That website you put up Kev is really weird.   How many people are going to sit through 100 seconds of blank green wall? :sleepy2:  And then the choices are really strange, although I did like the cough!  :tongue6:  My mind was definitely boggled!  :icon_bounce:  Its hard to believe the Government of Ontario sponsors this! :dontknow:  Poor GJC's hard-earned taxes going on something this peculiar.  :angry4:  Well, perhaps I'm just old-fashioned and not "with it" cause I don't understand why anyone would watch this, let alone be encouraged to stop smoking by it.  :angry9:

PP, I think that is why they call the site stupid. You did better tan me at it I got fed up after a couple of minutes. There is a lot of advertising on the TV these days about quiting and some of the ones sponsored by this site are pretty good so I thought it was going to be a compilation of these advertisements - sorry.
At least they are now starting to offer help to smokers who want to quit but are finding it hard.
Also all cigarette packages have to carry a warning about the dangers of smoking and most have some pretty grotesque pictures on them. In fact they had to tone them down as they were having the opposite effect on teens who started collecting them because they were disturbing.
Lolo, the gambling machines are a definite curse. Today the leader of the NS liberals who are in opposition at the moment has changed his mind about these machines and is calling for a ban on them. He wants half of them removed by the end of the year with the remainder gone by 2007.
His statement said that although they are a great revenue generator for the government it is time to do the moral thing and ban them from everywhere but the casino's.
Of course the Premier used his tired old line stating that if they took out the government machines it they would soon be replaced by illegal ones so the problem would still be there.
He might be correct but I know that before the government took them over and made it legal there were only a handful around and those were not in every bar around.
The bar owners are also complaining that they would lose so much business that a lot of them would have to close and want to know how much the government will pay them in compensation should the machines be banned.
To them my question is do they run a bar or a gambling house.
I doubt that they will ever ban these things as they are about the best cash cow around - if you don't care about the countless lives they have ruined.

Read the following article today and feel that it shows how stupid some people can be and also how incredibly brave others can be. Can not imagine where she got the strength to carry the other woman down two flights of stairs. :clap2:  :clap2:

R.I. Woman, 80, Carries Friend Out of Fire

HOPKINTON, R.I. (AP) - An 80-year-old woman rescued her 67-year-old neighbor from an apartment fire, carrying the ailing woman down two flights of stairs.

Madalene Lindill put Grace Brayman's arms around her neck and carried her on her back out of their elderly housing complex Wednesday after Brayman accidentally ignited a fire in her apartment.

Lindill told WJAR-TV there was ``nothing to it.''

``I'm not a great person,'' she said. ``You just don't think at the time.''

Hope Valley-Wyoming Fire Chief Fred Stanley described Lindill as ``a small woman.'' She told him she had served as an auxiliary firefighter in the 1960s in Plainfield, Conn.

``She had to be a spunky little character to do what she did,'' Stanley said.

Fire officials said the blaze started when Brayman, who was wearing an oxygen mask, lit a cigarette. That caused the mask to ignite, and the fire spread to a chair and carpet.

Brayman, the only person hurt, was released Thursday from a hospital.

Stanley said Lindill would receive a department citation given for acts of heroism.

I used to smoke. Then my Wife gave birth to our Daughter and I woke up.

Smokers have to be living in the greatest state of denial there is.

Stop and think a minute: is it really wise to set fire to some dried leaves and inhale deeply, knowing that it's probably fatal to you and maybe the people around you?

Hands up who thinks "yes". Really?

Its like the proverbial Dog chasing it's tail, I dont smoke and would not deny anyones rights to smoke.
I dont think digesting copious ammounts of Alcohol is good for ones health, and as I have said before Smoking doesn't change ones personality the harm it does is to the Individual Smoking, I choose to go where there is no smoking allowed.... However while hurling abuse at the Smoker the Drinker can turn into an aggresive person who will abuse their wife, children, kill, drive on the road, while intoxicated with hardly anyone batting an eyelid.
Give me a Smoker any day over an over bearing obnoxious loud mouthed  drunk who smells just as bad. but is not going to try and pick a fight with me because he has smoked 10 cigarrettes........
Has anyone every studied what goes into the making of Alcohol????? :typing:

Well, that depends on what you are referring to as "alcohol"!  I do not believe that a good wine, whether white or red, is bad for you, if you drink it with a meal and not the whole bottle all by yourself in one sitting.  Neither do I think a small amount of Cognac or Calvados or Armagnac do one any harm.  And the same for a good sherry.  I am a great believer in the the pleasures of fine food and wine.   :monty:

Lived with smoking parents for most of my childhood.

I hate it now.

I even dislike seeing other people smoking at work - in an arcade full of children. Responsible generation of adults...

"Smoking has never changed ones Persona,"
You have not had much contact with ex smokers I take it.  :poked:
In my view those that have given it up are far less tolerant than those who have never smoked, Its because the ex smokers know what they are missing where as the the ones who have never smoked just don't care.

i used to smoke and found it so easy to give up. when i was 16, i was on 20 a day and cut down after ny first child, then i quit completely when i metmy b/f as he didn't like it,didn't bother me in the slightest. i believe you have to want to give up to be able to do it. my friend has tried loads of stuff to give up and acxtually has a medical condition that means she has to give up, but she can't, lol
Due to recent cutbacks and until further notice, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.
