Smoking Poll
« on: 27 February 2005, 21:53:10 »
March 9th is National No Smoking Day in the UK.  Whether you are a smoker, ex smoker or never smoked, most people have strong views on the subject.

I personally think that focusing on one particular day will not encourage anyone to quit.

I also hope that they never ban smoking in open public places.

Instead of a particular day being used to target smokers, with all the money spent on big billboard notices etc, the money would be better spent going towards supporting those who are trying to quit, with the free provision of patches etc.

Anyone agree?   disagree?

I dont smoke, but I am sick to death with the circus that surrounds Smokers, ie Advertising Dont Smoke help gadgets, pills and patches, every second ad is telling you the dangers of smoking around children, doesnt this come under the heading of Common Sense? If I happen to be anywhere and I see someone smoking I dont go near them, why should a smoker be branded like a bloody Leper? give the poor sods a bell and be done with it.
I do not allow smoking in my home, Our Daughter smokes, and sits on the verandah as do my friends when ever they wish to indulge, it has been banned in most Restraunts in Australia and next year will e banned in Pubs and Clubs, how Ironic is that? You cant smoke because you will be endangering peoples health, but step right up and give us your money for a Bourbon and Coke, Please!!!!! Equal Rights my foot, in this Country a Smoker is treated like a  second class citizen, I dont care what anyone does with their body, Im not doing it, and I dont think that anyone should be allowed to dictate where you can and cant smoke.
Spend some millions on educating the young on the Dangers of Alchol Abuse.

A timely debate. below is an article from the CBC (Canada's BBC) news:-

UN tobacco control treaty comes into force
Last Updated Sun, 27 Feb 2005 15:47:28 EST
CBC News

GENEVA - The first international treaty aimed at reducing smoking-related deaths and illness came into effect Sunday, the World Health Organization said.

The treaty was a Canadian initiative, said H?l?ne Goulet, director general of Canada's tobacco control program.

Fifty-seven countries, including Canada, have ratified the treaty, formally known as WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Member countries promise to crack down on advertising, sponsorship and promotion of tobacco products. The treaty also pushes for tougher tobacco labelling laws.

WHO says smoking is the world's second leading cause of preventable deaths. Hypertension is the first.

The UN body estimates nearly five million people die prematurely each year from tobacco-related diseases.

If current smoking trends are not reversed, WHO warns by 2020, tobacco will kill 10 million people, 70 per cent of them in developing countries.

"So this treaty is a first step in that direction," said Goulet.

WHO tobacco co-ordinator Douglas Bettcher says the treaty, if properly implemented, can curb the global tobacco epidemic.

The treaty contains provisions aimed at dissuading children from smoking and helping adults to kick the habit.

It recommends tax and price increases on tobacco products, a crackdown on smuggling and measures to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke.

**************
Does not really say much but I wonder how many millions went into making this treaty?

In Canada each province has its own rules regarding smoking. Here in Nova Scotia there is no smoking in public places. If you wish to smoke you have to go outside and there are regulations about how far you have to be from a door, window etc. Hospitals and schools have a policy where you can not smoke on their grounds which includes sitting in your car in an out door parking lot.
Bars and clubs do not allow smoking until after 9pm, unless they have an enclosed smoking room with its own ventilation. The 9 pm thing does not make much sense as the residue will be there the next day any way but the reason they give is that at most bars food is served until 9 pm so kids are allowed in there to eat if of course they are accompanied by an adult. Thing is there are places such as the pool hall in town where you have to be 19 (drinking age) no kids allowed yet the same rules apply.
Yes we all know smoking is bad for you and any one around you but in as far as yourself is concerned the choice should be yours.

Here in L.A. you can't smoke anywhere inside except in your own home, and I must say that I find it much more pleasant not to have people smoking in restaurants or offices.  The air conditioning systems in most buildings spreads any odor throughout the floor.  So I am in favour of a ban on smoking inside.  But, as you may have noticed, before the ban was in place, a substantial number of smokers were totally inconsiderate and blew tobacco smoke all over everybody, which was extremely unpleasant, aside from the health factors.  And even after the ban came into effect, there were certain people in our firm who just closed their office doors and carried on smoking regardless.  They had to have one recalcitrant smoker's office scrubbed down and repainted after she left, and they never totally got rid of the smell of stale tobacco.  At least on the whole, smokers now have no choice but to go outside if they want to smoke.

Now of course those inconsiderate smokers are causing a lot of other health problems. They go outside and huddle around in -20 weather with the snow or rain howling around them and then go back in the buildings sneezing and coughing on everyone so that colds and flu are spread like wildfire

Yes you are correct.
They set up tents outside every building and supply them with convection heaters.
Some of them even have floor shows and a bar set up.
Of course having all these tents set up means that there is no room for traffic, but no one seems to mind.

Wait a minute - maybe this is all the result of a dream I had

Kevin, I wasn't joking!  GJC tells me they have them for the staff at Toronto airport since there is no smoking allowed in the terminals and otherwise they'd freeze to death!

Ah, but Toronto is in Ontario and as I mentioned all provinces have their own rules. Here in Nova Scotia they really want us to quit smoking and take up gambling, apparently the Goverment makes more $$$$ from gambling and there are not so many nay sayers

Excellent.  Well, at least you don't die from gambling.  Gambling is all the rage in the States too: lotto, bingo, slots, and even cards.  The Indians are making a fortune from it! :angry9:

They are here as well. The problems seem to be with the slot machines. They are in just about every bar and there are people who are addicted to them. It seems that once someone wins a decent amount they feel they will do it every time and so spend their whole house hold income on them.
The problem does not seem to be limited to any one class either as there are people from all walks of life, education and social background.
You are wrong when you state that gambling does not kill people as it has been confirmed as the reason for a number of suicides and suspected in many others.
Almost every week there is a story in the news of someone who has stolen from there employer, charity, social group etc and have given the reason as gambling.
As with tobacco, and booze, this is a real cash cow for the government so they are very hesitant to make any changes.
In Nova Scotia we have two casino's, and these do not appear to be as much of a problem as the slots in the bars. Seems like each Indian reservation also have a 24 hour games room where the only games are slots.
Although the minimum bet on these machines the maximum bet is $2.50, and they spin a whole lot faster than the ones at the casino's so a player can (and usually does) lose over $10.00 a minute. The maximum they can win on one spin is $500.00.
Being electronic devices these machines can be programed to the percent that they will pay out, currently I think I read that they are set at 28%. Which means the government gets about 68 cents of every dollar that goes in, the bar gets 4 cents and 28 cents is returned to the players.
In the casino's I think that the player take is slightly higher. Did I mention that the government owns the casino's?

Sorry Lolo, I thought by my previous comments that you would know that I am a smoker.
I understand the problems non smokers have with those of us who indulge as on those frequent times when I have quit I notice the smell that is left on clothing and around the house.
I find that the people who seem the most against smokers are those that have managed to kick the habit. From there comments I can only conclude that having given up the one thing in life that they enjoyed they are bound and determined that every one should be as miserable as they are.
People who either have never smoked or have not smoked much in their lives seem a lot more tolerant toward us poor souls who are having a hard time getting off it.
Not sure about the double edge sword though as while I am not a brandy affectionate I do enjoy a beer or two ( some times even more).
Guess I have either the best or worse of both worlds depending upon your point of view.

Not sure if any one would be interested, but here is a web site from the Ontario government.

Sorry KBTS  I didn't realise you smoked, as is your god given right, Im just sick of what I think is the injustice surounding smokers. Gambling in this Country is a Huge Government Revenue, most clubs have no windows in the Gambling rooms, so that people have no idea of the time of day, a fact I was unaware of. Im sure Aussies would bet on two flies walking up a wall,I play Golf and after a round, the women usually put in a dollar and have a keno ticket, I throw my dollar in then forget about it. If we win its a bonus but it is so anti social as all the women watch the Screen as if their lives depended on it Im trying to have a conversation and all I get is "Oh no 6 is out and no 14 " who cares.? and the Poker Machines are worse they are in pubs and clubs everywhere, a lot of young teenagers are addicted I have a friend who has a gambling problem she is quick to tell me what she has won, but I watch her put the money in time after time and walk away with nothing,
