Gaia and Shakti
« on: 07 January 2012, 08:04:48 »
Well, just to bore you all, I am posting pics of my new sweethearts.  They are sisters and I have had them about a month now.  They are very nice and love to be petted, but do not much like to be picked up and cuddled.  I am working on that.

Hope they give you many years of comfort and companionship Pp.

Did they come with those names Pp or did you pick them?

No, Kev, I chose their names.  When my two were rescued they were both preggers and almost immediately had litters, and then the rescue place got two more litters of unweaned motherless kittens, and my two took care of those as well and weaned the lot.

So I chose Gaia, because she is the Mother Earth goddess in both Greek and Pagan mythology, and Shakti because she is the Divine Mother goddess in Hindu mythology.

They are both adorable and really sweet, so I am working hard on gaining their trust.  Gaia is fairly relaxed although she won't let me pick her up yet.  But Shakti is still very skittish and only lets me pet her when she gets jealous of Gaia.

They are both very playful and chase their "mousies" around with abandon.  So far (touch wood), they have behaved themselves and not attacked the furniture.  I have a zillion scratching posts all over the apartment, which they use, but I had to put some "Sticky Paws" on the bottom half of the sofa to discourage them from sticking their claws into it.

But so far, they are giving me a lot of pleasure.

Sounds like you are really enjoying having them around and am sure that they are very happy with you loking after them.

I have a couple of scratching posts around the house and one of those pad things. Find as long as I remember to spray a little cat nip on that one Ginny uses it. She has however had a go at the carpet on bottom step of the stairs.

A couple of days ago she was on the couch and somehow got her claw caught in the fabric. Getting her unstuck was not easy but managed to do so with out hurting her or having to cut the fabric, thankfully.

If someone gave me a cat, they'd be charged with animal cruelty

LOL @ Gerry!

I normally try to keep my cats' claws clipped, although I haven't attempted it yet with these two.  I chickened out and asked the vet to do it when I took them for a once-over.  I have always cut my cat's claws but then I got my previous cats as kittens and it was really easy to start off doing it, so they never thought anything of it.  The current two do not like being picked up at all, so I can see we shall have some fun and games when I do try to clip their claws.

It's fun having two sisters.  They chase each other around the place and have little fights and then lie down together and start grooming each other other.  Makes me kind of superfluous!

Aww they are really adorable!  Did you get them from one of the kill shelters, I am always crossposting animals from such places.  You prob saved their lives by giving them a home.

No, it wasn't a kill shelter.  It was a girl who runs a rescue home.  She takes in animals until she can find homes for them.  I think my two had been with her for more than a year because they were preggers when they were found and given to her, so she kept them until the kitties were weaned, and then she got two more lots of motherless kittens, so my two took care of them, and she has now adopted out most of the kittens, so it was time to find homes for the mums.  Of course, I couldn't not take both of them, as they were sisters and had always been together.  So it's working out pretty good and we are gradually getting used to each other.  They greet me at the door and I'm allowed to pet them both.  Gaia likes having her tummy rubbed, but Shakti is still very spooky and streaks off if I approach her.  But she is getting calmer.
