Weather
« on: 06 January 2012, 04:37:37 »
Has this been a strange year weather wise where you are?

We were lucky to get a little snow just before Christmas so had an almost white one but the temperature is all over the place. We have had as low as -10 and as high as +15 all in the same week.

Even out on the prairies where the temp is normally down to the - double didgits at this time of the year they have been getting to the + side of Zero.

Just wondered if it was the same everywhere

It’s the same over here; we’ve had the wettest and coolest Spring and Summer (so far) on record.

It was 36c just 2 days ago and today it’s only 22c.  Some evenings, it’s been a little cool and I’ve had to put the heater on low just to break the chill and that's the first time in the 43+ years I've been here.

I hear that in the UK it’s been milder than their normal winters

So I've heard Gerry.  But some Canadian friends who arrived in England around December 15th said it was snowing when they arrived at Heathrow!

We had a fairly cool summer/autumn in L.A., i.e., I don't recall any periods when it was over 100F for several days (I can't think of high temperatures in C).

Our winter has been relatively cool, but not unusually so, and we have hardly had any rain, which is not good.  We currently have a fire alert in the outlying areas because the humidity is below 15%.  Although it gets up to 25C during the day, this evening it is 12C in my area, which is reasonable.  Over Christmas it was down to 6C in the morning, which felt quite appropriate!

Today the 9th Jan, it seems exceptionally hot, yet it's only 26c with 77% Humidity but it feels like it's well into the 30's.  The other week, the temperature was in the 30's and it didn't feel as hot as it is today  :dontknow:

The humidity makes a lot of difference.  When I was in Saskatoon at the end of October, the temp was around 0C but the air was so dry that it didn't feel cold at all.  Whereas here in L.A. when it get down to 6C, it feels bloody freezing.  And it must be 10 times as bad in Paignton.

It was - 10 yesterday here in NS today it went up to -4 (so far) in the midst of a snow storm that will be changing to ice pellets and then rain as the temp goes up to + 8 over night. Seems we are getting a bit of everything at the moment
 :dunno:

Is it dry there Kev, like in Saskatoon, or is it humid like the UK?  -10C must be horrible if is humid.  I was amazed at how not cold I was in Saskatoon when it was around 0C - -1C, because it was so dry and there was very little wind.  And of course, everybody heats their houses properly and has good insulation so you don't have to wear woolies indoors.  I got quite used to taking off my shoes and coat in the porch room and padding around the house in my socks and a T-shirt!

NS is more like the UK than Sask. Pp
Temperature here has been fluctuating between +12 and -9 this past week.
We don't wear woolies in the house either though, lol.
Glad that you enjoyed your visit. Was that the first time you had been up this way?

Well, I have set foot in Canada before.  Many years ago, I visited the Canadian side of the Niagra Falls, and also I've been to Vancouver and Victoria (in the rain).  But I've never seen the prairie before, or anywhere quite as flat as Saskachewan.  I'm a Devon girl and I like rolling green hills and the sea.  I'd probably like NS in the summer!

I spent a couple of weeks in Cornwall when I was in the RAF.  I went there to train with the Boxing Team and I must say that is the hilliest region I've ever been and the road runs were crippling  :weight:

Cornwall's not half as nice as Devon, particularly South Devon.  The most beautiful place on earth!
