If heat rises, why is it so cold at 1000 feet?

And your 1000 feet nearer to the sun?

An English Rose

Just had a look.  That's great.  I'm so jealous of you having sunset at 10:20 p.m.  It's dark by 8:20 p.m. here.  I love the long English summer evenings.  And although I didn't see them very often, the early dawns were wonderful too.  I used to go home from London for a week in June.  This was before there were any motorways and the A303 was a 2-lane road.  I used to leave at 5:30 a.m. and pick up a medical student whose family were in Plymouth and by the time we were out of the London street lamps, it had become light.  There was very little on the road and I used to be able to drop him off in Newton Abbot by around 9:00 where his dad would pick him up and take him down to Plymouth, and I used to get home to Paignton around 9:30.  It was beautiful when the sun came up over the fields.  I don't ever remember doing it in the rain, it always seemed to be lovely weather.

The medical student (Andy) lived in some flats just round the corner from me in Whitechapel.  One time I went and knocked on his door at 5:30 a.m. and this very cross man opened it - I was in the wrong street, lol!  Well they all looked alike in the dark!  And another time, Andy decided he would drink enough beer the night before to dehydrate himself so he wouldn't have to pee until he got home.  Of course, he didn't drink quite enough for that to work and so every half hour I had to stop by a field so he could jump out and relieve himself!  He used to come back from Plymouth with a large supply of his mum's home-made pasties, enough to keep him going until he went home again!

Aaaah, the good old days when I was young and carefree!!!

I bet that was a pleasant drive, with no M25 to contend with, A303 gets crazy now  especially around Stonehenge, you can spot all the  business commuters travelling to their holiday cottages down Devon way.
I live not far from the 303, and in the mornings you can hear all the  traffic rushing along.

That's one thing I miss about the UK, and that is their very slow and late sunsets in summer.  Over here, if you blink slowly, it's dark after the first blink

lightning strikes is detected by a radio reciever. detects anything for around a 50 mile radius. a typical lightning strike will register a lot of counts. due to the nature of the beast it will pick up strong local interference
